New York State Cosmetology Practice Exam

Unlike California and Texas, New York never dropped the practical component of its cosmetology exam, you're still clearing two separate tests here. The NYS Department of State Division of Licensing Services requires 1,000 hours of approved training before you're eligible for either.

Written exam: 2.5 hours, multiple choice, 70% to pass. Available in 14 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, and Bengali, a notably broader language option than most states offer.

Practical exam: 3.5 hours of hands-on skills demonstrations, also scored to a 70% threshold, covering the actual procedures, cutting, coloring, chemical treatments, sanitation practices, applied in real time rather than described on paper.

Content across both exams draws from the same core areas: sanitation and safety, hair styling and coloring, skin care, nail technology, and client consultation, with the written test checking whether you know the standards and the practical checking whether you can execute them.

Scheduling happens through your NYS License Center account, a $15 non-refundable fee applies when you book, separate from the $40 application fee (or $50 if you add a temporary license while your full license processes). Testing runs at 20 locations statewide, so location and scheduling availability are worth factoring into your timeline alongside your actual study prep.
